  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Eliza Cross -- Compelling and Beautifully Written : I'm already a Patricia Raybon fan and love her nonfiction books, so I've been eagerly anticipating her foray into fiction -- and what a stellar debut! All That Is Secret is the riveting story of Professor Annalee Spain's quest to unravel the mystery of her father's murder. I was completely absorbed by page 2 of the Prologue and found the setting and period details of Denver in the late 1920s especially fascinating. Patricia's precise narrative and well-drawn characters make this book a joy to read from start to finish, and I'll be thinking about this story for a long time to come. Can't wait for book #2! • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Sarah Farrow -- TWISTS AND TURNS APLENTY : History, mystery, romance and Gospel all mixed into a fast paced, mind-bending plot that kept me guessing until the very end. The opening chapters are like getting on an old-fashioned wooden rollercoaster. Suspense builds as it creaks and clanks up that first tall hill. Then, when it lets go at the top the twists, turns and plunges just keep coming. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2021 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from RuthG -- Historical mystery/romance : What I especially love about this book is the fascinating & sobering glimpses it gives us of Denver in the early 1920s: the intense power of the Klan, the corruption, the extractive industries. The struggles of the Black community, portrayed with painful honesty. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from L. Kennis -- Spellbinding 1920s Mystery Speaks to the 2020s : From the first paragraph, I knew this book would be difficult to set aside. It has a strong and silky voice that called me to keep reading until the last secret was revealed. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2021 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from JLSS -- Page Turner : I have been a Patricia Raybon fan for years, so I was very excited for her first non-fiction mystery. Her impressive journalistic and non-fiction background only compliment this newest genre in her wheelhouse. There is so much to relish. Savvy, intriguing plot and characters kept me caring deeply about the outcome of the protagonist. Mystery with adventure, danger, some humor, a bit of sass, a tasteful romance and solid Christian spiritual insights made this a page turner from the prologue! As a Denver native and history lover I thoroughly enjoyed having our city as the backdrop to the story. The storyline allows readers to learn more about the KKK’s power hold in places of government, commerce, etc. here in Colorado. Those realities really set the tone for the elements which made for a suspenseful mystery. A compelling story in so many ways with some deep redemptive food for thought which I loved. • 2.0 out of 5 stars from Gwen Freeman -- Terrible plot holes : Many plot holes, just a few: why did the handsome preacher send for the detective a year later? Or at all? He didnt know her. How did two people cohabit a baggage compartment for three days and not know the other was there? Why wasnt there a hue and cry over a murdered man in the baggage compartment? There is no way the black woman and poor white boy defense could proven self defense, this should have been a serious problem, it was just glossed over. How did handsome preacher not know who the man was who was pointing a gun at him and others in broad daylight when he was good friends with the man’s father and everyone else in his parish recognized the man instantly? Why did the man suddenly want to kill the cook and her daughter a year after he knew they had seen the dead baby? How did bad guys mom get ahold of the used train ticket from the dead guy and why did she keep it? Why did a rich white man feed small clues to the black woman detective and choose her, a stranger, to be the one to reveal his shameful secret? Which brings up the point, the detective didnt detect anything. She was placed undercover by handsome preacher and just happened to overhear a complete confession from the guy we knew did it from our first introduction. And who said “blah blah blah” in 1923?
